How to choose
- New regime — best if you don't claim many deductions. Lower rates + ₹75k standard deduction + tax-free up to ₹12L taxable (87A).
- Old regime — best if you max out 80C (₹1.5L), 80D, HRA and home-loan interest, so your deductions typically exceed ₹3.75–4L.

Frequently asked questions
Which tax regime is better in FY 2025-26? +
It depends on your deductions. The new regime has lower slab rates and a ₹75,000 standard deduction but allows almost no other deductions. The old regime has higher rates but lets you claim 80C, 80D, HRA and home-loan interest. If your total deductions exceed roughly ₹3.75–4 lakh, the old regime often wins; otherwise the new regime usually does.
What is the 87A rebate in the new regime? +
Under the new regime for FY 2025-26, a Section 87A rebate makes taxable income up to ₹12,00,000 effectively tax-free. In the old regime the rebate limit is ₹5,00,000.
Is the new regime the default? +
Yes. From FY 2023-24 onwards the new regime is the default. You must explicitly opt for the old regime if it benefits you.
Can I switch regimes every year? +
Salaried individuals without business income can choose the regime each financial year while filing their return.
